So word from the Cannes film festival (which I almost went to....but didn't....sigh) is that yesterday a select group of press were invited by the Weinstein Company to advance preview screenings of three of their upcoming films. One was David O. Russell's (The Fighter, Three Kings etc.) new one. Meh. The next was Tarantino's "Django Unchained", which I never really fancied but reports suggest that it looks rather awesome. However the one I am most excited for (see: salivating like a starved dog) is Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master". I've known about this film for some time, largely because a dear friend of mine is in it, and it promises to be at the very least controversial. The story is apparently about the birth of a religion not too disimilar to Scientology. This is apparently confirmed by the fact that PTA, a proven director of some worth coming of the back of multiple oscar winning "There Will Be Blood" couldn't get any studio to go anywhere near it, such is the influence of said 'religion'. So the film was independently financed and is now "near complete" according to Miramax.
Philip Seymour Hoffmann plays the titular "Master" but in the trailer released yesterday, he was nowhere to be found. It instead focused on Joaquin Phoenix looking utterly mental. Nice to see one of my favorite actors returning to screen. Also Jonny Greenwood is providing the score once again, after doing incredible work on There Will Be Blood. It's creepy, and uncomfortable and feck knows what's actually going on, however, I could not be more excited by this film. Meow.
